Rainbow Over Dahican Beach

We had the special privilege of spending time with the local Amihan Boys and their community based on Dahican Beach in Mati Davao Oriental today.  The Amihan boys are comprised of a group of young people and children who have been adopted into a family who live in community on Dahican beach.  They are supported by the local government to be guardians of the marine eco-system.  These young people  are trained in conservation and preservation while also attending school during the day.  The Amihan boys are also known globally for their skim boarding skills and in fact one of their community members is the current Skim Boarding Champion in Asia with a number of young up and coming new talents being trained for future competition on a global scale.

This is the second time that we have visited with this talented young family and we are looking forward to establishing a partnership that will benefit the local economy and provide a sustainable infrastructure that will have a long term impact for future generations.

While our own children were enjoying spending time with the Amihan boys and being shown how to skim board, as the sun began to set, we were struck by a beautiful rainbow appearing in the sky.  Between the months of December to April, the winds coming in from the East are very strong and they call this the Amihan Winds, hence the name for the Amihan boys.  This provides the perfect environment for water sports activities, especially surfing and skim boarding. The light just before sunset was the most beautiful polarised colour and provided the perfect lighting for a powerful image.  The fact that the rainbow just happened to appear as the rains started to come added the perfect amount of drama and lighting to the image.

You will notice a lot of debris on the sand and this is due to the recent Typhoon Pablo which struck surrounding regions in December of 2012 and the resulting high volumes of driftwood, coconuts and other debris which the Amihan boys are in the constant process of clearing up (while our family swam with the local boys, we too joined in the collection of debris and driftwood washing ashore while enjoying the water activities). The beach of Dahican Bay is normally pristine without any debris or rubbish as the Amihan boys are fastidious managers of the coast line and marine life.
