Whale Shark Video

Whale Shark Video: We were thrilled to be at the right place and the right time to capture this most amazing video footage of a whale shark swimming near the coastline of Dahican Beach in Mati Davao Oriental.  Watch it to the very end to see the grand reveal!!

STEP International is working in partnership with Mati City Government and the local Amihan Boys to promote sustainable eco tourism in this beautiful city and unique coastline. The whale shark was looking for plankton which is very abundant in these waters due to the fantastic marine management provided by the Amihan Boys through the local Mati City Government.

This particular male shark was very healthy and was approximately 16 feet long.  The young boys you can hear in the video are some of the local Amihan boys that live on and manage this local coastline.

Working in partnership with the Amihan boys, we were able to capture this underwater footage taken by the international skim boarding champion ‘yogi’ with his adopted father and mentor Jun who jumped into the water chasing the shark on a longboard and armed with the go-pro hd hero2.  The other view from the shoreline was taken from the coastguard lookout post using a Nikon D5100 with the 28-300mm lens and the Rode Stereo Videomic Pro for sound with a windshield (or sometimes referred to as a ‘dead-kitten’ due to the furry nature of the cover – trust me, we get a lot of odd looks carrying this mic with its furry demeanour!).
